Soil Samples & Walking the Property

We took our first, joyous steps onto the property this week. Our purpose was to gather soil samples we would ship to Texas A&M Agrilife for analysis. Now that we have an initial two year lease on our plot, this project feels real. Everything else is a question mark. But we have land. That doesn’t just feel real. It is real. There is a tiny piece of earth that we are allowed to steward and cultivate. Upon inspection, there were not many surprises. The plot has suffered the same abuses of almost any urban lot. Our topsoil was almost non-existent. Compaction was heavy. And limestone appeared as shallow as three inches beneath the soil surface. However, what we know, and will demonstrate, is that the earth has an amazing capacity to heal herself.
